WP Social Blogroll

Fan me on Facebook:

WP Social Blogroll (formerly known as Feed Reading Blogroll) provides a sidebar-widget and a template-tag that add an enhanced blogroll to your sidebar. It checks on all your linked sites, when the most recent update has occured (see example in my sidebar on the frontpage).

The plugin is inspired by Blogger’s Blog List.

The check is performed by reading the date of the most recent feed-item. The feeds must be valid RSS2 or ATOM-feeds, otherwise the plugin cannot read the date-information provided by the feed. The Plugin uses the Google AJAX Feed API to access the feeds.

Based on this information, the age of the most recent feed-item is calculated and then displayed under each bookmark in your sidebar.

Furthermore, an icon for each bookmark can be displayed.

All documentation is located at the Wiki.

There you will see, how to install the plugin and how to configure it.

Language support

The plugin comes with support for the languages mentioned below. It can be translated into other languages as well.

If you like, you can take the file feedreading_blogroll-de_DE.po and use it as the basis for a translation into your own language.

You can contact me, if you have translated the file and I will add the new language to my plugin. Currently these languages are supported:

Place the language-file (just the one with the .mo-extension) inside /wp-content/plugins/feed-reading-blogroll/. Download the latest language file here.

  1. Hi,

ich find die Plugin-Idee und Umsetzung ziemlich klasse. Werd das Plugin sicherlich die Tage mal installieren und ausprobieren. 😉

Wünsch Dir einen schönen Sonntag Abend.. Fussball ist ja gleich 😉

    liebe Grüße,

    Chris

  2. Jan – that is exactly the plugin I’m looking for since quite some time!

But does it doesn’t seem to work – or does it need a “start-up time” to read the most recent feed-items of my blogroll bookmarks?

    Please check @ http://absolutelybangkok.com

On the bottom of the Left Sidebar I got your plugin – near the bottom of the Right sidebar is the normal Blogroll.

    What’s going on?!

@Dan: Which browser are you using?

  5. Hi Jan,

    Chris

  7. I love this plugin! I wish all plugins were so easily configurable. I keep getting an “error on page” message on the lines for the jQuery and where the title attribute is set, and unfortunately I’m not experienced enought to fix it, but I love this plugin!

  8. Hi Jan,

I would very much like the posts to be sorted by last update. So I decided to do things the open source way 🙂

Ok, I had a look at your code… currently you use WordPress to do the sorting, but sorting according to date requires fetching the dates live, then sorting the array based on those values.

I’ve written a javascript function for you that will do that. Though I’ve just spent a while faffing around trying to insert it into your code, but that would just end up being a dirty hack.

You can download the function here. As you can see, it’s actually a very simple function, so hopefully it won’t be too hard to integrate into your (very fantastic!) widget if we work together.

Let’s say we’re creating a new sort option called “mostrecent”.

I reckon that, in your current version, at line 536 you simply test to see if the sort option is “mostrecent”, if not, then you execute your current line 536 and let WordPress handle the sorting as your currently doing. But if it is “mostrecent”, then you call my javascript function (using some php/javascript fusing sorcery).

Bugs that will appear are anywhere else in your code where you pass your widget’s sorting option to WordPress… if “mostrecent” is chosen, then it doesn’t matter how WordPress sorts the bookmarks, as long as it’s not passed an invalid variable.

You’ve got my email. Please get in touch, and let’s make this happen!

    Pete
